A great original clock circa 1790 – 1800. Hand painted dial and moon phase. View a copy of a letter that the consignors great aunt sent to her father, her nephew, when she transferred the clock to him in 1966: “The clock was given as a wedding gift to Rebecca Brooke [my father’s great great grandmother] when [she] married Rees Thomas March the 29th 1810 …,?? she writes. “After his marriage, Rees Thomas became proprietor of the famous Gulph Mills … . He was a man of high standing and one of the original anti-slavery men of Montgomery County.?? The Thomases were Welsh Quakers who emigrated to Pennsylvania before the Revolution. Rebecca Brooke’s father, Captain Benjamin Brooke, according to the letter, was “a distinguished officer and patriot of the Revolutionary War??. An important regional tall case clock by the maker Griffith Owen (1759-1829) who, at the time this clock was made, worked in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After finishing his apprenticeship with Jacob Godshalk in 1780, Owen inherited the service of the “Old State Clock (now Independence Hall) an highest prestige appointment for a Philadelphia clockmaker. In 1793, fleeing the Yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, he moved to Towamencin in Montgomery County continuing in the clock making business until about 1800, when he returned to Philadelphia. Despite his career successes as a clockmaker, Owen seems to have died a poor man in 1829, intestate and penniless, owing “six years back rent”. This clock, with it strong visual appeal as a fully developed Chippendale style, was probably made at the end of this style’s height of the pre-revolutionary period. 97″H x 19.25″W x 11.5″

Finials are later replacements. Unless otherwise stated the condition of the mechanisms of these clocks is good, but that does not mean they run or do not need repairs. There is no guarantee of either the mechanical performance of clocks nor the completeness and originality of their parts and components. In most cases we have not removed the dials from these clocks, and have not checked inside for manufacturers or makers names for attribution.

18th century, brass dial engraved "Edward Duffield Philadelphia", arched dial with applied spandrels, brass eight day movement, seconds sweep and date aperture, set in a waisted walnut case with arched bonnet, inset quarter columns and paneled base, two weights, winder, and pendulum present, 89 x 22-1/2 x 11 in.
