Original 10 in. painted wood dial with black hour numbers and colorful corner spandrels, pierced blued hands; 30 hour weight driven wooden works movement with typical 30 hour iron side weights and smaller alarm weight, brass covered pendulum bob. Mahogany case with ebonized crest and half columns highlighted with gilt stenciling, large mirrored door panel and reverse painted lower Time Is Money tablet; signed Silas Hoadley, Plymouth, Conn. Franklin Clocks. Dial has some visible paint loss, lower tablet has a vertical hairline in the right side, repaired hour hand, the case is in nice overall condition with a cleaned finish. 35.5 in. high x 18 in. wide x 4.5 in. deep. Weight: 24 lbs.

Description
Circa 1835 American Silas Hoadley 30 Hour Shelf Clock with 10″ Good original painted wood dial with slight flaking, Rare ivory bushed upside down woodworks movement with alarm (incomplete), Very collectible Silas Hoadley “Franklin” clock, rare movement, good label with “Time Is Money” logo on lower reverse glass painting. This clock is referred to by collectors as upside down woodworks movement clock. Originally this clock was marketed by Silas Hoadley in honor of Ben Franklin’s famous quote “Time Is Money”. Unrestored fair condition with minor wear, surface refinished, some flaking to backing of glasses. Needs cleaning. 36.5″H x 17″W x 5.5″D

Silas Hoadley Franklin Clock
Description
Shelf clock by Silas Hoadley called his “Franklin Clock, probably because the reverse painted slogan of Franklin’s “Time is Money” is rendered on the case. These “upside down” movements incorporated ivory or improved bushings.
Condition
Unless otherwise stated the condition of the mechanisms of these clocks is good, but that does not mean they run or do not need repairs. There is no guarantee of either the mechanical performance of clocks nor the completeness and originality of their parts and components. In most cases we have not removed the dials from these clocks, and have not checked inside for manufacturers or makers names for attribution.

Silas Hoadley Franklin Mahogany Splat & Column Mantle Clock with Alarm. 10 in. painted wood dial with gilt highlights and floral painted corner spandrels, pierced minute and hour hands and gold painted alarm indicator; 30 hour wooden works upside down movement with escapement at the bottom of the movement, hour strike on an iron bell, alarm mechanism striking on the same bell, 2 typical conical iron side weights and original smaller weight for alarm mechanism, wood pendulum stick and brass covered bob. In a mahogany case with eagle carved crest, pineapple finials, acanthus carved half columns and claw feet; original Knowsley Hall, London (overpainted) & Time is Money (repainted) reverse painted tablets, in nice condition, has an enhanced original finish. 39 in. high x 17.5 in. wide x 5 in. deep. Weight: 25.75 lbs.
