Monumental Richard Whittington Grandfather Clock. Approx.12 feet high. Heavily carved oak case with 3 ft. tall putti at the base, around a central medallion of Sir William Whittington Knight, under the date 1793, the main door has a 4 ft. carving of a young Whittington with his cat chasing mice at his feet, father time & lady justice on either side, back panel has musical instruments, the bonnet with full standing winged angels and a carved 3 dimensional bust of Whittington at the crest. Massive dial has a lg. silvered chapter ring with applied Arabic hour numbers, fancy pierced hands sub-dials for Whittington/Cambridge chime on 8 bells, sub-dial with 7 songs on 12 bells, moon phase and 3 lower sub-calendar dials surrounded in pierced gilt brass filigree. The movement has large brass plates with engraved swirling leaf designs, deadbeat escapement and runs on 4 large figural painted weights, one for the chime, one for the song/tune, one for time and calendar and one for the lg. cathedral gong; movement and dial are both signed, Joshua Hampson  Fecit 1743. Approx.12 feet high x 52 in. wide x 34 in. deep.
