Rare Howard & Davis No. 4 Banjo Clock. Original 8 in. painted metal dial signed “Howard & Davis, Boston” has black Roman hour numerals and blued open moon hands; brass weight driven 8 day time only movement signed “A. Howard, Boston” and “D.P. Davis” has a solid brass pulley, iron No. 4 weight, ebonized wood pendulum stick and brass covered bob. In a rosewood grain painted banjo style case with reverse gilt and black painted throat and tablet glasses. Nice overall condition, original finish, no inpainting to the glasses, weight baffle replaced, brass cover is loose from the bob. Albert Howard, a cousin of Edward Howard, went into partnership in Dec. 1858 as “E. Howard & Company”; in March of 1861 they formed a joint stock company called the “Howard Clock & Watch Company” where Albert Howard was chosen as President and Edward as Superintendent & Treasurer. The factory was closed in May of 1863 and in October of the same year, Edward was able to reform the company with himself as President. 32 in. high x 13.5 in. wide x 4 in. deep. Weight: 17.25 lbs.
