Pictured on pages 22 and 23 in the book Playing Their Parts, by Florence Theriault on 19th Century Automata, Musical Boxes and Singing Birds. Described as a fine ebonized wooden clock case lavishly inlaid in the Boulle manner with brass, mother of pearl and tortoise shell decorations. The animated scene depicts six people and a dog and horse at a blacksmith shop. A wonderful example. 28"x17"x7", Working condition.

French Industrial Animated Windmill Clock. Conical form, the front is mounted with 4 windmill blades rotating clockwise running on an independent movement winding in the rear. The body of the case has a textured surface resembling a stone structure with pierced brass railing along the walkway, windows & front door, stands on a black marble base. 3.5 in. silvered dial of the timepiece with black hour numerals and black hands; round brass 8 day spring driven time only movement with platform lever escapement under an aneroid barometer with 3 in. silvered dial and thermometers on either side. Timepiece is not running, animated mechanism is in good working condition with minor repair to the blades, weathervane missing 2nd arrow (should have crossed arrows). 28 in. high x 10.75 in. dia.

French Animated Locomotive Industrial Clock. Excellent bronze case in the form of a steam locomotive on a black marble base with rails, has a stick thermometer on the front of the funnel and large 3 in. paper dial compass in the top, aneroid barometer with 2.5 in. silvered dial mounted in the boiler and timepiece mounted on the side of the cab; wheels are animated by an independent spring driven movement mounted under the train, has cow catcher in the front. Timepiece has a 3.5 in. silvered dial with black hour numbers, brass door bezel with beveled crystal, round brass 8 day spring driven movement has a platform lever escapement and half hour strike on a bell; running, clock strikes, animated mechanism is functional. 16.5 in. high x 20 in. wide x 9 in. deep. Weight: 31.25 lbs.

French Bronze Animated Gothic Steeple Clock. Bronze 2 tone gilt and patinated case in the form of a tall gothic cathedral with long arches, tall spires, balcony, standing and seated figures. 2.5 in. porcelain dial has open moon hands and black Roman hour numerals, typical round French brass 8 day movement, singed ÂPonsÂ, with half hour strike on a single bell with 2 hammers once on the half hour and 2 times for each hour; simultaneously with the bell strike 2 animated figures seated at the balcony of the clock swing a hammer at a bell hanging between them. Clock is in good overall condition, having a nice finish and running; minor repair to the hammer of the figure on the base, few hairlines in the dial radiating out from the center. 22.5 in. high x 12.5 in. wide x 5 in. deep.

Rare Chinese Animated Triple Fusee Bracket Clock 6.5 in. porcelain dial with black Roman hour numerals and 15 minute numbers outside, fancy pierced brass hands with sweep seconds hand, red and clear paste-set jewels around the bezel. Quality triple fusee movement with engraved brass plates having a filigree border signed ÂCheong Smag and also signed with 6 character Chinese mark for ÂHao Sheng Xiang of the Guangdong ProvinceÂ, verge escapement, quarter hour 2 bell strike striking progressive double bells on the quarter hour and strikes the hour. On the hour the clock activates the animated mechanism of swimming ducks and spinning glass rods resembling a waterfall in the open frieze panel and a cylindrical cluster of spinning glass rods forming a waterfall in the top of the case under a drum form having a paste-set jeweled bezel with 4 in. blue enamel panel behind a large spinning paste set center pinwheel surrounded by 10 smaller pinwheels rotating in alternate directions, the jeweled teardrop finial at the top also rotates clockwise. Large size gilt bronze case has extravagant filigree mounts throughout with mythical heads above the corners, seashell handles, pierced decorated galleries and floral mounts with colorful green jeweled corner spandrels having red, white and green jeweled flowers; the drum top has blue enameled bronze ribbons on each side and an ornate bulbous top with red jeweled Chinese characters which read ÂDa Ji (Great Prosperity). Clock is running and striking, all animated mechanisms are working. 36.5 in. high x 15.25 in. wide x 12.75 in. deep. Rare French Industrial Animated Windmill Clock. Conical form, the front is mounted with 4 windmill blades rotating clockwise. The mid-section has a textured surface resembling a stone structure. The front center shows the round silvered 2 in. dial of the timepiece under a aneroid barometer with thermometers on either side. The lower base has a smooth brass finish and is accented with 2 faux windows and a trap door in between, which reveals the wind for the animated mechanism, all over a black marble platform base and weathervane top. In good original condition, 18 in. high x 7 in. dia.
