French August Moreau/S. Marti Large Balloon Flight Figural Victorian Table Clock, Circa 1889, 3 1/4″ enamel dial, slightly convex, 8-day, circular brass movement with Marti medallion, rare & unusual allegorical North Pole balloon expedition figural clock made for the 1889 Paris exposition, heavy red variegated marble base, with seahorses, bears, walrus, balloon in clouds with ribbons & “Gloria the Victor” pointing towards North Pole holding torch, plaque on case reads “Aug. Moreau AU NORD POLE” — August Moreau was one of the most celebrated sculptors of his time, this is a wonderful clock depicting the exciting times of attaining passage to the North Pole, very good restored condition, the dial has flaking near winding arbors & looks good, case refinished. Height 34″.
