An important reverse painted and mirror and wood cased wall clock by Joseph Ives, (American 1782-1862). Invented and Patented the Mirror clock probably in the 1830s, and also invented the roller pinions used in clocks.

Joseph Ives mahogany scroll top looking glass clock, Bristol, Conn., c. 1818. Beautiful complete clock with 3 urn finials, full length door with 2 reverse painted tablets, painted Roman numeral dial with teardrop blued-steel hands flanked by bird’s-eye maple corbels, reeded flat columns flank the looking glass over the lower reverse-painting on glass, the blue sponge-painted interior, eight-day clock. Beautiful, rare, Joseph Ives clock! Measures approx. 54″ tall x 20″ wide x 5 1/2″ deep.

A Rare early 19th century Joseph Ives “Looking Glass” clock, ca.1818. 8 day weight driven time and strike movement with steel plates and Brass gears, roller pinions and a short drop pendulum and painted metal dial. Mahogany case with a scroll work crown, Bird’s-eye Maple detail and original Brass urn finials, single long door with Eglomise dial surround, mirrored center section and Eglomise lower panel, flanked by finely reeded flat columns with turned Bulls-eye tops and bases. Restored by Herschel Burt, in good running order. Refinished case, with slight wear, older restored dial paint and Eglomise panels. ex collection Dr. Joseph Fern, Pittsburgh. 52″ high.

Joseph Ives Looking Glass Clock, mahogany veneer case with reeded pilasters and scrolled top, Ives patent movement with roller pinions, rack striking and steel plates, pendulum bob, pullies and finials missing, original painted dial, steel hands and glasses with the upper glass severely cracked, overcoated finish, left scroll repaired, both trains will run when pulling on the cords, circa 1818-1819, full size version with full length pendulum, 54 in. high x 19.5 in. wide x 6.5 in. deep.
