7.75 in. painted metal dial signed “Marriot, Fleet Street”; John Marriot was at 175 Fleet Street, London c.1790-1805. The dial is designed in 1 piece with sub dials at 10:30 and 1:30 and sub calendar dial aperture; has black Roman hour numerals, 5 minute numbers, pierced brass hands, Silent-Chime sub dial and sub dial for selecting the 6 tunes including “Dance, Cotillion, Cangolee, March, Minuet, Dance”. Brass dial plate has pierced decorated brass filigree corner spandrels, oil painted on brass scene in the arch with large home in the background of a wooded landscape and a man and woman are seated to the left and right of the animated cutout figure of Chronos rocking back and forth with the pendulum. The quality brass 8 day triple fusee spring driven movement has fancy engraved brass plates; a verge escapement with large 1.5 in. dia. crown wheel, hour strike on a single bell and also plays 6 tunes on a nest of 8 bells. In a mahogany case with gilt bronze figure of Erato finial on a plinth flanked by pierced filigree corbels, has 4 bronze corner finials and stands on filigree decorated bronze feet; has chamfered front corners with inlaid highlights, pierced filigree spandrels at the top of the front door and on the side panels under hinged bronze handles. Movement is running, striking and playing music, excellent flame grain mahogany case. 26 in. high x 15.5 in. wide x 10 in. deep. Weight: 31.5 lbs.
