A mid 19th century Jerome, Darrow & Co. shelf clock. 30 hr time and strike wooden works movement with a painted wooden dial. Transitional Mahogany case with shaped crest, single long door with a reverse painted lower tablet flanked by flat reeded pilasters on a flat base. Older refinishing with minor damage, repaired crest, lacks finials, replaced tablet, running momentarily when cataloged. 35" high. ESTIMATE $300-400

A 19th century Jerome & Darrow (Bristol, Conn) shelf clock. 30 hr time and strike weight driven wooden movement with painted wooden dial. Mahogany case with shaped crown and stenciled decoration on crest and columns, single door with clear upper and mirrored lower glasses, flanked by applied half columns. Older finish in fair condition, chip to door frame, minor veneer chips. 34 1/2″ high.

A mahogany and mahogany veneer shelf clock by the partnership of Chauncey Jerome and Elijah Darrow of the 1830s. This is an early version of the triple decked shelf clocks of the 1840s and later. Robust carving, another favorable feature of the first manufactured shelf clocks, can be seen with the crest, paw feet and half columns mounted aside the two glazed doors. The hand painted wood dial is another early feature.

Although typical of this maker who was active only between 1824 and 1826, the look of reeded pilasters with neatly carved capitals, a scrolled top with hollow brass finials (likely original)is certainly an affectation from the earlier Eli Terry “Pillar and Scroll” designed clock. This clock, with a later reverse painting of Independence Hall, is in good condition. There is an internal pasted label designating the maker as “Jerome, Darrow & Co.”.
