Handsome Jacob Petit Porcelain Clock
second quarter 19th century, Paris, the casket-form case set with an urn-form finial, the dial framed with molded torches on the sides and painted swags of fruit on a gilt ground, the brown-glazed base with a polychrome scene of shepherds on the front and sepia medallions on the sides, raised on scrolled feet, set with a silk-string suspension movement, the case signed "J.P." in underglaze blue.

Jacob Petit French Porcelain Mantle Clock. Beautiful porcelain case signed with blue ÂJ.P. mark for Jacob Petit, has a light peach colored background with blue & gilt highlights of flowing rococo style filigree and an applied floral strand of garland on the front of the base with a cast bronze top finial and dial bezel. Has a 3 in. silvered dial with open moon hands; French brass 8 day spring driven silk thread movement signed ÂLegrand Freres and ÂDupont a ParisÂ, half hour strike on a bell. In good condition and running, replaced pendulum, no breaks or hairlines in the case, has a few typical chips to the applied flowers. 15 in. high x 8.5 in. wide x 5.5 in. deep.

Condition:
The mantel clock is in good condition. Painting and gild dcor are slightly rubbed in places. The dial show fine hairlines cracks. During in house testing, the clock was fully functional; no guarantee on long term precision and regularity. The dimensions of the case are 30.5 x 20 x 11.5 cm.
Jacob Petit (1796-1868)
The porcelain manufactory of Jacob Petit was one of the most important and well-known manufacturers in the 19th century, becoming one of the major producers of Rococo style ware in the 1830s. Between 1830 and 1850, new manufacturing techniques were developed under Petit, he modernized production process, without sacrificing the craftsmanship. In 1834 he showed his skills at the exhibition in Paris, with varied new forms that revolutionized the manufacture of porcelain. His highly decorative porcelains, shaped in Louis XV style were very popular in England and France. (bde)
