George Jones NY Astronomical Wall Regulator. Walnut and burl veneer case with ladies head. One weight astronomical painted metal 16″ dial and 3 tube simulated mercury pendulum, signed in bright on the pendulum frame- George Jones & Co. at No.5 Courtland St. NY. Case is 90 1/2″long and 33 3/4″ wide. Made circa pre 1872. Case has an old refinish job, some veneer is bubbly and loose. The clock is running at this time.

Description

George Jones Astronomical Regulator in Herter Bros Case. A phenomenal oak Herter Brothers case; has carved heads on the crest, turned columns and maidens on the bonnet with full carved lion’s heads on the sides, complete with burled panels, incising and ebonized trim and borders. The 2 door credenza base has pilasters with carved faces over lion’s claw feet, centered with oversized turned columns on either side. A single full length drawer is centered over 2 doors and complete with quality ebonized and incised embellishments and highly grain oak.Top quality George Jones polished gilt brass movement; has black double swell and spade hands, silvered dial with black Arabic numerals and minute markers on the chapter ring and subsidiary seconds dial; Roman numerals on the subsidiary hour dial. Deadbeat escapement; quality gilt brass pulley, weight and 3 jar “Mercurial pendulum”. Condition: Movement unsigned, no staining, tarnish or scratches to the refinished dial, movement or pendulum; pendulum has leaked slightly, missing one dial screw, replaced bezel, bonnet door lock is missing, second weight pulley missing from the left side of the case, minor loss to molding on right side of case, cutout in the molding on the right side of the top, replaced pulls on the drawer. 66″W x 120″H x 18″D. Original 16 in. painted metal astronomical dial with outer dial having 5 minute numbers, sub seconds dial over a sub hour dial and good original hands; quality brass 8 day weight driven time only movement has pyramidal plates, deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, 2 quality brass pulleys with brass covered side weight, wonderful high quality pendulum with steel rod, bob has fancy silvered engraved framing with 3 mercurial brass jars with the larger center jar being silvered, signed “Geo. A. Jones & Co. at No. 5 Courtland St., NY”. Beautiful carved walnut case has a maiden’s head on the crest, large burled panels and large turned teardrop finials. Measures 92 in. high x 34 in. wide x 11 in. deep.
