Mahogany in wonderful original old varnish finish with polychrome floral painted wood dial with Roman numerals, original hand painted lower tablet with original country manor scene with gilt surround in lower tablet, brass time & strike spring driven factory installed works, brass urn finials, 16.5 x 4.25 x 31.5” high. Original printed label on interior reading in part “Plymouth, Connecticut Elli Terry & Sons”, with pendulum . Terry and Sons switched to the more modern brass eight day spring driven works and used up the existing cases and dial by slightly altering them to except the new works at their factory.

Condition

Minor wear to dial and plugged winding holes below 2nd set of winding holes done at factory when they switched from wood 30 hour weight driven works to brass spring driven 8 day works, slight veneer loss at base, back mount board replaced, still Very Good with wonderful old patina.

Painted wood dial has a 10 in. chapter ring with black hour numbers, gilt enamel and floral painted borders and good pierced hands; typical 30 hour wooden works movement with count wheel bell strike mechanism, iron side weights, wood pulleys and brass covered pendulum bob, label in the back of the case reads “E. Terry & Sons, Plymouth, Conn”. In a mahogany pillar & scroll case, has broken arch crest, turned finials, turned side columns and valanced feet; scenic reverse painted lower tablet has paint flaking, case has an overcoated finish with a single break and repair to the crest. 29.5 in. high x 17 in. wide x 4.5 in. deep.

Eli Terry Sr. (April 13, 1772 – February 24, 1852) was an inventor and clockmaker in Connecticut. He received a United States patent for a shelf clock mechanism. He introduced mass production to the art of clockmaking, which made clocks affordable for the average American citizen. Terry occupies an important place in the beginnings of the development of interchangeable parts manufacturing. Terry became one of the most accomplished mechanics in New England during the early part of the nineteenth century. The village of Terryville, Connecticut is named for his son, Eli Terry Jr. (fle)

Printed paper maker’s label stating in part, Patent Clocks, Invented by Eli Terry. Made and Sold by E. Terry and Sons., thirty-hour wooden movement with pendulum and two cast iron weights, Condition overall very good, one finial needs repaired, separated at middle seam. 29” x 17 1/2” x 4 3/4”.

DESCRIPTION: Eli Terry & Sons pillar and scroll clock. Hand painted floral dial with Roman numerals. Case with turned columns beneath a broken arch top with brass finials. Reverse painted glass tablet with landscape scene with partial paper backing. Eight day movement. Marked to interior “Patent Clocks. Invented by Eli Terry. Made and sold at Plymouth, Connecticut. By 1828 E. Terry & Sons. Warranted if well used” with directions for setting and running the clock. With two weights, key, and pendulum. MEASUREMENTS: 29-5/8″ x 17-1/2″ x 4-5/8″. CONDITION: Back right foot and top left scroll decoration repaired. A few small areas of wear to painting. Some minor wear and nicks to wood.
