Description

Carved Walnut Black Forest Cuckoo Clock, c. 1870, elaborately carved case with perched eagle at the top, the bone Roman numeral and turned wooded dial framed by carved oak leaves, acorns, and nesting bird with eggs at the bottom, eight-day time and strike spring powered movement with cuckoo automaton and bellow activated sound on the hour and half, ht. 38 in.

Condition

Condition: This impressive case, although intended for a weight powered movement with holes for chains and pendulum, the spring powered movement appears to be the original; pendulum is a replacement, bellows restored.

Description

Antique German Black Forest Cuckoo – Quail Clock
circa 1900, cast brass unmarked three-train movement. Cuckoo call counts the hours with gong strike and sounds on the half hour. Quail call sounds every quarter hour with gong strike. Both birds are wooden with articulated wings and beak. Dial with nailed on Roman numerals and original carved bone hands. The elaborately carved walnut case is surmounted by a matching carved stag’s head crest with original carved wooden antlers. Includes carved pendulum and 3 weights.
