E. Howard & Co. No. 48 Astronomical Floor Standing Regulator. 14 in. original painted iron astronomical dial has black 5 minute numbers on the chapter ring, 3.5 in. sub seconds dial and 3.5 in. sub hour dial, signed “E. Howard & Co. Boston, Mass.” Has original pierced diamond hands; brass weight driven time only 8 day movement signed E. Howard & Co. Boston, deadbeat escapement with applied steel pallets, retaining power and Geneva stop, quality E. Howard & Co. 4 jar mercurial pendulum, quality brass covered weight and pulley. In a nicely refinished walnut case with pierced carved crest, shell and filigree under a turned finial, carved side columns over long pendent teardrop turnings with rosettes, raised burled and incised panels on either side of the wood dial bezel; below the dial is carved drapery with long throat door & glass exposing the pendulum, beat indicator and weight, the base has raised and inset panels with center carving. Crutch is repaired, cradle at the top of the stick is replaced, escape & pallet bearings on the back plate are replaced with brass; touchup to the dial markers, numbers and signature, the pierced carved beat indicator bracket is replaced though the silvered beat indicator is an original E. Howard & Co. indicator. 9 ft. 6 in. high x 30 in. wide x 18 in. deep.
