DESCRIPTION: An antique french J.S. large figural mantle clock with a signed figural metal statue by Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915) titled “La pensee brisant ses chaines" (Thought breaks the chains). The large winged male figure sculpture depicts an athletic young man who allegorically embodies human reason and thought. For the French sculptor Emile Louis Picault, intelligence, creativity and curiosity are the driving forces that advance humanity. Picault powerful Genius wears wings and symbolizes the striving of the soaring human spirit towards knowledge. On the floor there is a sheet with the inscription "Lumen et Libertas" (light and freedom). This is a patinated metal sculpture with a bronze paint patina finish. Signed "E. Picault ", with the title of the figure on the front of the base. The sculpture sits atop a green veined marble base. The clock is inserted on the rock where the male figure sits and has a white painted metal dial, and arabic numerals. It is signed on verso "J.S France". Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a French sculptor. He began his career in 1863 with the exhibition of a work in the Paris Salon. He became famous for his allegories, warriors, heroes and the portrayal of historical and mythological personalities.
