Aaron Willard Jr. Thermometer-front Patent Timepiece or Banjo Clock, c. 1815, mahogany case with hinged brass bezel, convex glass, unsigned, painted, roman numeral dial, barbed wire hands, gilt rope frames enclosing the reverse-painted tablets, upper tablet with thermometer and signed "A. Wilard Jr.," bottom glass depicting a country mansion, carved lower gilt bracket, uniformed cut head with brass movement, T-bridge suspension, recoil escapement, alternate train mounted with through bolts, ht. 39 in.
Note: The throat tablet is signed with one "l" in Willard. In his book Willard's Patent Time Pieces, A History of the Weight-Driven Banjo Clock 1800-1900, Paul J. Foley includes chapter 17 that discusses thermometer-front timepieces.

Antique American Aaron Willard Tall Case Clock, signed Aaron Willard
Three orb form gilt metal finials and pierced pediment above an arched form door opening to a conforming dial with moon phase calendar aperture and a Roman Numeral and Arabic chapter ring signed Aaron Willard centering a pair of tapering full columns and all above a single waist door flanked by a pair of fluted quarter columns raised on shaped feet.

American “Patent Timepiece” Banjo Clock, Circa 1825, 7 1/2″ painted zinc dial refitted from old parts from another clock, 8-day, brass weight driven movement, early 19th century mahogany “patent timepiece” made by a Willard family contemporary, 1/2 round molding with glazed panels, even with its hurts it still is a beautiful & well made timepiece that compares favorably to Massachusetts’ South shore timepieces, as outlined in chapter ten of Paul Foley’s 2002 book “Willard’s Patent Time Pieces” (available at www.roxburyvillagepublishing.com), case with minor wear and loss on 2 corners, reverse painted tablets are Victorian replacements, movement complete and running. Height 33″.
