DESCRIPTION: George-III grandfather clock featuring a gilt, etched dial center crowned with a name boss in arch: "John Amour Kilmares". Face has a seconds dial with a floral design and a tertiary complication above the "VI" mark. Movement casing is decorated with stars against a blue background and an arch pediment with finials and a column on either side. Pendulum is decorated with painted floral motif. Case is decorated with a carved crest, dolphins on the hood and base, and a mirrored back inside open to view via three glass panes in the body. Movement is fully functional and sounds on the hour and half hour; includes pendulum, movement casing key, weight/pendulum casing key, and weights. A fine 19th century French gilt brass carriage clock with calendar in the manner of Abraham Louis Breguet
The Classically inspired case with folding bud handle and four bud finials on an engine turned ground over rosettes and reeded columns to a matching base on button feet, the white enamel dial with blue Roman numerals, minute track and blued steel trefoil hands over a subsidiary date dial within an engine turned mask, the movement with twin barrels driving a gilt platform with bimetallic balance to a lever escapement, the strike and repeat on a bell behind a shuttered rear panel. Together with an associated mid 19th century leather covered travel case and a double ended key. 16cms (6.25ins) high.

This carriage clock is closely modelled on the early travel clocks by the great Abraham Louis Breguet. Comparable examples by Breguet were sold in these rooms 11 December 2019, lot 106 (Breguet number 2889, circa 1804), lot 107 (Breguet number 4248, circa 1837) and lot 109 (Breguet number 2963, circa 1820).

An early 19th century Grandfather clock. 8-day weight driven time & strike movement with painted metal dial and “Rocking Ship” escapement. Mahogany case with classic “Broken Arch” hood. Older finish with several old repairs to case and hood, lacks hood columns, minor damage to dial. 92″ high.
